General Meetings are on the 3rd Wednesdays of the month (unless otherwise noted) at the Turn Verein Hall located at 3349 J Street, Sacramento starting at 7 PM.  Bring 2 wine glasses for your use unless otherwise noted.

January 20, 2021 – General Meeting via Zoom: Alison Crowe.  WineMaker magazine’s Wine Wizard answers your questions. 

February 3 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members are welcome. 

February 19 – General Meeting via Zoom: 2019 White and Rosé Wines Evaluation.  Don’t bottle yet!  Get your 2020 white and rose wines evaluated and receive recommendations so that they’ll be at their best before finishing.  More details in this blog item.  Please use this wine evaluation form

March 3 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

March 17 – General Meeting via Zoom: Oak and Finishing.  Guest speaker: Elizabeth Tangney, Director of Viticulture and Winemaking at Cornell Vineyards. Elizabeth guides us through oak, finishing, gasses, and knowing when to bottle.

March 21 – Learn to Make Limoncello via Zoom.  Spend an hour of your Sunday afternoon learning to make limoncello and other citrus-based cellos.  We’ll share formulas and recipes.  

April 7 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

April 21 – General Meeting via Zoom: Yeasts. Guest speaker – Matt DiVisconte, Lodi Wine Labs.  Matt’s presentation shares all that you’ve wanted to know about wine yeasts.  Get the Zoom invitation from Gin: ginyangstaehlin@yahoo.com.

May 5 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

May 13 – Bubbles Under Pressure via Zoom.  Join this casual Thursday evening session when SHW members share their experiences, techniques and equipment used to get bubbles (intentionally) into their homemade wines.  Members only.

May 19 – General Meeting: Red Wine Evaluations (Non-Bordeaux varieties) via Zoom.  Guest Evaluators:  winemakers John Troiano (Wreckless Blenders) and Luke Laubaugh (Heringer Estates).  By now, your 2020 reds are quietly ageing in your cellar so let’s taste them!  Details to follow.

June 2 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

June 16 – General Meeting via Zoom: Corks.  Guest speaker – Russ Warren, ACIC Corks and Closures.  Learn about how corks are made and the different types of corks for your bottling needs. Contact Gin Yang for Zoom invitation:  ginyangstaehlin@yahoo.com.

July 6 – Learn About Making Vinegar via Zoom.  Guest speaker:  Brad Alderson.  Learn to make vinegar from wine (intentionally), to avoid cross-contamination and other precautions.  Members only.

July 7 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

July 21 – General Meeting: Get Ready for Harvest.  Bob Peak guides us through the wine making processes and readying our cellars for the upcoming harvest.  Bob is a consultant for WineMaker magazine, former owner of The Beverage People, and seasoned home wine maker, brewer, and fermenter.

July 31 (Saturday)  – Winemaking 101.  This in-person half-day workshop is designed for the beginning and novice winemaker.  Learn the steps for making dry wine, needed equipment and supplies, and winemaking timetable (winemakers don’t go on vacation during harvest).  Open to public.  See here for the deets.

July 31 (Saturday) – Equipment Certification.  Club members can rent SHW’s wine making equipment – destemmer-crusher, press – but need to be certified in the safe operation and cleaning of the equipment.  Certification training is available at the Winemaking 101 workshop (don’t need to attend the workshop).  Contact Joe McGillivray at pyramidlake59@gmail.com.

August 4 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

August 7 – Fruit Wine Making.  Learn to make wine out with fruit other than grapes.  Judy Pinegar makes wine out of  jalapeño peppers, oranges – and Judy’s sourcing sweet juicy peaches for this workshop.  Register here for this limited-number in-person workshop.  Members only.  Location:  Loomis.

August 18 – General Meeting:  Wine Styles – Old World, New World (via Zoom).   Guest speaker Scott Harvey of Scott Harvey Wines spends an evening with us talking about the characteristics of both wine styles to help you decide which you prefer.   More details and to register for wine samples at this blog post.  Members only.

August 18  – September 15:  Entries open for SHW Jubilee.  Submit your wines into the  Club-exclusive wine competition.  Judging takes place on October 9 followed by awards ceremony and picnic on October 10. First entry is free; additional entries are $8 each.  See here to enter your wines.  Members only.

When the Grapes Are Ready – New Winemakers Group Crush complements Winemaking 101 (above) and aspiring winemakers will get the details at WM 101.  Members only.

September 15 – General Meeting:  Red Bordeaux Evaluations.  Bring a bottle of your newer red Bordeaux variety wines and receive feedback from winemaker Luke Laubaugh (Heringer Estates) and your peers. Bring two wines glasses for your use and let’s taste and talk.  See here for the details.

October 6 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

October 9 & 10 – Jubilee Wine Competition and Picnic.  SHW’s Jubilee is a 2-day event that highlights the best in wine making.  October 9 (Saturday) is the wine competition and the results are revealed at the Jubilee Picnic on October 10 (Sunday).   Hit the links for the details.

When the Apples Are Ripe – Learn to make hard apple cider.  Watch for blog notice for details on this focus group.  Members only.

October 20 – General Meeting:  Desserts, Fruits, Fortifieds, and Sparklers Evaluation.  Guest evaluators are Joe Real and Val Tiangco, award winning fortified and fruit wine makers.

November 3 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

November 13 – Winemaking 201. Topic specific workshop for winemakers with 3-4 vintages of experience. Members only.  Details to follow.

November 17 – General Meeting:  Annual Meeting and Travelogue.  This is the Club’s annual business meeting when the membership elects next year’s executive board members.  Nominations will be accepted on the floor (show up!  You might be elected!}.  With business out of the way, settle in for travel fun and wines from Greece. Details to follow.

December 1 – Executive Board Meeting via Zoom.  All members welcome.  

December 8 – no General Meeting.  Maybe a Holiday Party?
