The Meeting. Want to know more about oak and oak tannins in your wines? Come to this Wednesday’s SHW meeting when guest speaker Bob Peak discusses adding and managing oak in wine. Bob will also share tips for keeping wine barrels sweet and clean.

The Raffle. Barrels Unlimited has generously donated a new 30-gallon American oak barrel to the Club, and we’re raffling it off at the meeting! Current members only, please.
Oak in manageable quantities available at cost to members…
- Stavin toasted oak cubes are available for sale by the ounce (suggested dose is 2 oz. per 5-gal carboy). Use these cubes during bulk ageing to impart oak attributes. The cubes are available on an on-going basis; pre-order for larger quantities to ensure availability. See Bill Staehlin at meeting.
- At the onset of fermentation, some winemakers throw in handfuls of oak chips into grape must. This product does not lend oak flavor – the wood is used to help stabilize wine color and provide additional bulk during pressing. 3-pound bags for sale; available until gone. See Thad Rodgers at meeting.
California State Fair “California Home Wine” competition (click here for the details) – March 15, 2017 is the final date for entering. This contest is one of the requirements to compete for SHW’s Winemaker of the Year. VP Henry Wilkinson will be accepting your State Fair entry wines on Wednesday before the meeting in the Turn Verein’s back parking lot. Complete your entry forms on-line before the deadline.
SHW’s Jubilee is the other required competition to compete for the Club’s Winemaker of the Year. The competition and picnic-awards are on May 20 and 21, respectively. Details following soon!
