General Meetings are on the 3rd Wednesdays of the month at the Turn Verein Hall located at 3349 J Street, Sacramento starting at 7 PM unless noted. Bring 2 wine glasses for your use unless otherwise noted.

January 4 – Executive Board Meeting.  Location:  TBA

January 18 – A Wine of Place:  Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Randall Grahm returns to SHW to talk about his experimental vineyard, Popelouchum, and the wines from the vines.   Members and members’ guests only.

February 15 – 2016 White and Rosé Wines Evaluation.  Evaluator:  Craig Haarmeyer, winemaker/co-owner of Haarmeyer Wine Cellars in West Sacramento and Kurt Burris, wine merchant.  Bring TWO 750 ml bottles of your 2016 wine to be evaluated and winemaking notes.

March 1 – Executive Board Meeting.  Location:  TBA

March 15 – Oak: Why, When, How + Barrel Care.  Guest Speaker:  Bob Peak, winemaker and fermentation specialist.  Hear why you may want to add oak to your wines and some of the ways to oak your wines.  Bob will also cover barrel care.

April 19 – Red Non-Bordeaux Varieties 2016 Wines Evaluation.  Evaluator: Chik Brenneman, UC Davis Winemaker and Mara Couch, 2016 SHW scholarship recipient.  Bring TWO 750 ml bottles of your 2016 wine to be evaluated and winemaking notes.

April 23 – Bokisch Vineyards Winery Tour.  Lodi’s Bokisch Winery specializes in Spanish varietals.  Bokish winemaker Elyse Perry leads the tour and tasting.  $20 per person.  Contact J.D. Phelps for reservations:  jd.phelps@gmail.com.

May 17 – The Beauty of Terroir.  Guest Speaker:  Hoby Wedler, sensory scientist.  Hoby’s presentation is designed to guide the meeting attendees through the terroir of California and the world.  He’ll help us distinguish nuances in seemingly similar spices in three spice groups.  Next, we’ll taste three groups of two wines from northern California and discuss the terroir. 

May 20-21 – SHW Jubilee.  SHW’s Wine Competition and Awards Ceremony with Picnic.  Competition for members only.  Competition on Saturday, May 20, in Sacramento.  Awards Ceremony and Picnic on Sunday, May 21, in Loomis.  

June 10 – Blending Workshop.  Learn the whys and hows of blending with Phil Maddux, winemaker and co-owner at Lone Buffalo Vineyards in Auburn.  Members only; details in April 2017 The Grapevine newsletter.  This event is full.

June 17 – Lake County Wine Tour.  David Hicks plans your Saturday for a tour to Clear Lake wineries and a wine tasting / dinner party at his home in the evening.  This event is full.

June 21 – 2016 Red Bordeaux Varieties Wines Evaluation.  Evaluator: Layne Montgomery with m2 wines in Lodi.  Bring TWO 750 ml bottles of your 2016 wine to be evaluated and winemaking notes.

July 19 – Wine Additives: is your wine not what you want it to be?  Guest speaker:  Matt DiVisconte with Lodi Wine Labs.  Make your wine better!

July 22 – Winemaking 101.  Learn to make wine at this workshop designed for aspiring and novice winemakers. More info:  Winemaking 101 Registration.   Contact: Gin at ginyangstaehin@yahoo.com.

August 16 – Home Winery Gadgets + Equipment.  Members show off their home innovations and bring winery things and wine to swap.

August 20 – Vineyard Tour for Beginning Winemakers group.  Check out Old Vine Zinfandel in Lodi at Phelps Phamily Farms.  Contact J.D. Phelps at jd.phelps@gmail.com.

September 20 – Fermentation Frenzy!  Bob Peak, fermenter of just about anything, shares fasinating stuff on fermentations.  Learn about what the tight relationship between yeast (some are pretty wild) and bacteria and the delicious outcomes!  We’ll taste beer, cider, wine, (bring your wine glass), cheeses, sourdough bread, and pickles.

October 4 – Executive Board meeting.  Location:  Sacramento.

October 18 – Bubblies, Fruits, Sweets, and Ports Evaluation.  Guest evaluator:  Scott Harvey.  Don’t drink it all yet – bring two 750 ml bottles to the meeting for tasting along with your wine making notes.

October 28 – Harvest Dinner.  Spend the evening sharing your harvest stories with fellow winemakers.  Frasinetti Winery in Sacramento.  Contact:  Sue Summersett at sbsummer2002@yahoo.com.  

November 15 – Annual Meeting + Tasting the Gold + France Travelogue.  This is the evening when the incoming year’s leadership is elected by you.  After that business, we’ll taste wines that took top honors.  If your wines earned Gold awards in competition this year, this is when you get to show them off – please bring 2 bottles for tasting.  Then sit back for a French wine travelogue by Luke Laubaugh, UC Davis V+E student and SHW member, who spent part of his summer in France studying wine.  

December 6 – Executive Board meeting.  Location:  Sacramento.

December 13 – Holiday Party and Fundraiser.  (Please note: party is on 2nd Wednesday in December.)  No monthly meeting in December.  Let’s celebrate at the Turn Verein.  Details to follow.
