Group Buys: Old Vine Zinfandel, Nebbiolo, Barbera

We’re hearing through the grapevine that the 2017 harvest is going to be the best California’s had in years – what wines will you be making this harvest?

SHW member J.D. Phelps is coordinating group buys on some interesting varieties and he talks about them below.  If you’re interested, please contact J.D. at or 916.295.9121.

1 – Old Vine Zinfandel – Vineyard is 50+ years old and located in the coveted District 11 – Mokelumne River AVA of Lodi. Farmed to Lodi Rules standards for sustainable wine grape growing by Todd Williams – Vineyard Manager for St. Amant winery. Vineyard produces premium Zinfandel grapes that perfectly represent the high quality of fruit that can come from this unique region where the climate similarly matches that of well known Mediterranean wine regions.

Prior vintages have gone to Fields Family Wines (2016 Winery of the Year), d’Art Winery, Prie, Turley Wine Cellars, and home winemakers. Willing to coordinate group buy and arrange for on-site crushing with enough interested parties. .75cents/lb.

2 – Nebbiolo – Heringer Estates, Clarksburg AVA – Nebbiolo is a classic Italian varietal which is used in the Piedmont region of Italy in making the world renowned Barolo wines. It is similar in color to a Pinot Noir, yet with big luscious tannins and flavors of dark cherry, currant and clove. Head to your nearest wine store, find the Italian wines section and pick up a classic Barolo to truly experience what this grape can be in a wine.

I have a line on some Nebbiolo for the 2017 harvest and am looking for other passionate wine makers looking to make one of the truly classic old world wines. If you are interested in a group buy or possibly a focus group for Nebbiolo, please e-mail me.   Let me know how many lbs. you think you would be interested. There is no commitment at this point, simply trying to get a sense of how many are ready to tackle this wine.  Still finalizing pricing, but expect to be in the .75 cents to $1 / lb range.

3 – Barbara – Karmere Vineyards, Amador AVA – Karmere’s sixty-seven acres of estate grown vines are grown in the rich Sierra Nevada decomposed granite soils of Amador County, on gentle slopes of 1300 feet to 1600 feet elevation. The combination of well managed vines and well drained hillsides restricts vigor producing two to four tons of grapes per acre. The cool summer nights and hot days are ideal for producing robust red wines.  Karmere grows excellent grapes in the Shenendoah Valley.  This Barbara should be excellent.  .65 to .70 cents / lb.

SHW member Steve Kies has wine grapes for sale – about 800 lbs. Zinfandel and 800 lbs. Barbera.  These grapes have made award winning wines, Gold, Double Gold and numerous Silvers.  They are well cared for and have not had any mildew in years past. 

Priced at $.75 per pound with 250 lb. minimum you-pick. 

Wines made from these grapes are available for tasting, of course!  Call Steve as all his other grape varieties: Primitivo, Sangiovese, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Sagrantino have already been sold to SHW and PCWGA home wine makers.
