Bokisch Vineyards Tour – Spanish Wines

Contact and R.S.V.P. to J.D. Phelps at jd.phelps@gmail.com.

Join J.D. Phelps and other members of SHW on a tour of one of Lodi’s prized gems – Bokisch Vineyards.  The tour will be lead by Elyse Perry, head winemaker for Bokisch.  Elyse has a very inspiring journey into commercial wine making as she is a self-taught home winemaker originally.  You can get a preview of Elyse’s story here.

Bokisch grows and makes high quality Spanish varietals authentic to the traditional Iberian style.  Their Albarino and Tempranillo recently won Best of Class at the 2017 SF Chronicle wine competition.  This will be a great opportunity to taste some great locally grown and made “old world” wines will getting to pick the brain of a true artist.

Marcus Bokisch won’t be on our tour but Elyse can also answer your viticulture questions.

You are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the view overlooking the vineyard following the tour with a glass of something purple.

Date:  April 22, 2017; Saturday

Time:  11:30 AM

Cost:  $20 per person (includes tasting room fee following tour)

Location:  Bokisch Vineyards Tasting Room, 18921 Atkins Rd, Lodi, CA 95240

March 15 Meeting – Oak, Tannins, Barrel Care, Barrel Raffle

The Meeting.  Want to know more about oak and oak tannins in your wines? Come to this Wednesday’s SHW meeting when guest speaker Bob Peak discusses adding and managing oak in wine.  Bob will also share tips for keeping wine barrels sweet and clean.

Meeting starts at 7 PM, upstairs at 3349 J Street, Sacramento.

The Raffle.  Barrels Unlimited has generously donated a new 30-gallon American oak barrel to the Club, and we’re raffling it off at the meeting!  Current members only, please.

Oak in manageable quantities available at cost to members…

  • Stavin toasted oak cubes are available for sale by the ounce (suggested dose is 2 oz. per 5-gal carboy).   Use these cubes during bulk ageing to impart oak attributes.  The cubes are available on an on-going basis; pre-order for larger quantities to ensure availability.  See Bill Staehlin at meeting.
  • At the onset of fermentation, some winemakers throw in handfuls of oak chips into grape must.  This product does not lend oak flavor – the wood is used to help stabilize wine color and provide additional bulk during pressing.  3-pound bags for sale; available until gone.  See Thad Rodgers at meeting.

California State Fair “California Home Wine” competition (click here for the details) – March 15, 2017 is the final date for entering.  This contest is one of the requirements to compete for SHW’s Winemaker of the Year.  VP Henry Wilkinson will be accepting your State Fair entry wines on Wednesday before the meeting in the Turn Verein’s back parking lot.  Complete your entry forms on-line before the deadline.

SHW’s Jubilee is the other required competition to compete for the Club’s Winemaker of the Year.  The competition and picnic-awards are on May 20 and 21,  respectively.  Details following soon!

Group Buys sign-up sheets will be circulating at the meeting.  If you didn’t get a chance to sign-up at the last meeting, here’s your chance to find a group / variety.  See Cellar Master Joe Morgan.
