It was a dark and stormy night…
SHW extends gratitude to Randall Grahm, the Club’s guest speaker at last Wednesday’s meeting. Randall endured a rough time on the road to get to us including a 3 1/2 hour delay in Davis due to wind-blown obstacles in the road. He arrived just as we were finishing up Club announcements, quickly gulped down his dinner, and about 20 minutes into his presentation, the lights went out. A few minutes later, we were asked to evacuate the premises – transformer blew out- it was unknown when the power would be restored.
There were about 80 of us there. Thank you for your safe and orderly exit. Appreciation is extended to Club members who helped gather, clean, and stuff Club materials and equipment into the storage cubbies.
We didn’t get a chance to finish the evening’s business.
Earlier in the week, we announced that Randall’s “Been Doon So Long” book would be a raffle item at the meeting. Randall forgot to bring the book.
If you didn’t get a chance to give your membership form to Treasurer Jacque Brown, she’ll accept them at the mailing address on the bottom of the membership form.
Wine and Grape Symposium guest passes are still available for the Exhibits Only/Trade Show of the symposium. The passes are valid for next Wednesday-Thursday, January 25-26 and are $10 each. Contact Gin at email@example.com or 916 217-0294.

Kay Gist in Davis would like to give away a German bladder press that she and her huaband used in their winery. The equipment has been residing outdoors for a while and could be restored with TLC and parts. She plans to dispose of the press by this weekend so if you’re interested in it, contact her ASAP.
January 18’s SHW meeting features Randall Grahm, Bonny Doon Vineyard owner and winemaker, who will be sharing his experiences and outcomes of “Poplouchum”, his 280-acre vineyard where he sets out to produce wines of place. Imagine growing vines that produce wines found only in a particular vineyard or spot in a vineyard.
Randall may be one of the most unusual winemakers and viticulturists you’ll encounter. You may think his vision is way out there, maybe too unconventional for the common winemaker.
But then, you’re not an average winemaker, right? Come to the meeting.
Another unique opportunity awaits on Wednesday. Published in 2009, Randall’s book “Been Doon So Long: A Randall Grahm Vinthology” earned the 2010 James Beard Foundation Book Award winner and the 2010 Georges Dubeouf Wine Book of the Year winner. The book is a thoughtful and funny read of parodies, poems, satires, and lectures (a dictionary comes in handy). The difficult-to-find book has been out of print – we are jazzed that Randall is bringing a copy from his own collection for us to raffle at the meeting.

SHW has a limited number of e-vouchers/passes still available for the ‘exhibits only’ portion of the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center on January 25-26. Recipients of the e-vouchers must register on-line by January 17; e-vouchers are invalid after that date.

Thad says this trip is it! He’s making his last bottle run to Martinez for more wine bottles. 750 ml; deep punts. Antique Green and Flint (clear) only. New glass but the cases might have been sitting around for awhile. $5 a case.
Also available – gently used light green bottles; cased. No labels. Rinsed but will need more of your attention before using. $2.50 a case.
There’s more – Gusmer Oak Advantage Granular Toasted American Oak, 44 lb. bag; $60. These are the wood chips you toss into must before fermentation to help stabilize color and express tannins (not used for ageing).
