Monthly Archives: November 2016
Dress comfortably, grab your wine, and come celebrate with winemaking friends at SHW’s annual Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 14. If you haven’t already, make your dinner reservations with this form: holiday-party-reservations. Please reserve your spots by December 4. Seats are limited.
SHW members and supporters have donated fun stuff to auction and raffle off during the party including a foothill winery tour and crab dinner, painting lessons, award winning wines, art, local artisan foods and brews, lawnmower tune-up, and much more. You’ve also heard about the Lake County winery tour, and at the November meeting saw the photos for 2-nights at a home on Lake Tahoe West Shore. Details on these and other items to follow.
If you would like to donate or bid by proxy, please contact Vickie Rosalli at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your Club appreciates your support!
Wow! There was so much going on at the November meeting. We had a fun meeting with Dave Dart evaluating 11 fruit and port wines.
Next up is the December 14 SHW Holiday Party. Please make your reservations using this form: holiday-party-reservations. The evening’s silent auction and raffle is the Club’s only formal fundraiser and we appreciate your support.
One of the unique silent auctions items is a weekend for 2 people touring Lake County wineries and a Saturday night dinner party with wine tasting afterwards. The item is generously donated by David Hicks. The lucky successful bidder wins:
· A weekend stay for two in David’s home as his guests on Friday and Saturday night.
· Two front row seats in a Napa Black Tie 24 passenger van for the Saturday winery tour.
· Catered fiesta and wine tasting at David’s following the winery tour.
· No driving once you get there!
· Bonus! The winning bidder is encouraged to arrive by midday on Friday, so David can host you on a private tour of a winery or two nearby his home.
The weekend is designed specifically for SHW members so if you aren’t the winning bidder at the Holiday Party, you can still be a part of the fun. Here’s more details:
Lake County Winery Weekend and Dinner Fiesta
SHW member David Hicks, winemaker extraordinaire and Lake County resident, will again be hosting 24 SHW members and guests for a weekend winetasting and touring of several prominent wineries in Lake County. The event will be in mid to late June 2017 [exact date to be determined and details to follow in January 2017].
The winery tour will be followed by a catered dinner fiesta and wine tasting on the deck of David’s Buckingham Park home overlooking his vineyard on the shore of lovely Clear Lake.
Attendees will be staying in Upper Lake at the lovely Tallman Hotel or nearby hostelry. The day will begin and end in Upper Lake.
This is the third time David has hosted this event and it has been a big success each time. It’s an opportunity for those who have little experience to the quality and uniqueness of Lake County wines and the region, to expose themselves to yet another of California’s great wine growing areas. Feel free to ask around the membership of those that attended in the past and ask about their experience of the weekend.
It will be first come first served for sign ups so please let David know soon if you’re interested. Call him at 925 997-1997.
The Program. This Wednesday’s meeting is a busy one! Dave Dart, co-owner and winemaker at D’art Winery in Lodi, will be evaluating members’ port, dessert, fruit, and sparkling wines. Dave is a former SHW member and judges at the Club’s Jubilee. He’ll also be talking about port.
Ideally, please bring two 750ml bottles of your wines along with a completed wine-evaluation-form. VP Donna Bettencourt would appreciate a “heads up” if you plan to bring your wines – contact her at email@example.com. Extra forms are available at the meeting.
The Election. But before we start tasting…November is the Club’s annual meeting which includes the election of the incoming year’s officer positions. See the November newsletter for the slate of nominees. Additional nominations are also taken from the floor at the meeting. If you can’t be at the meeting to cast your vote, please send your decisions to the 2016 SHW Secretary Bruce Currie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Party. We end the year with a festive Holiday Party and Fundraiser on December 14, the second Wednesday in December. Enjoy an evening with shared wines, a delicious dinner buffet, bidding on unique silent auction items, and cheering on the recipients of SHW’s annual awards including the highly competitive Winemaker of the Year.
The Chance. To kick things off, at Wednesday’s meeting Vickie Rosalli will be telling you about some really cool silent auction items members are donating. We’ll also be raffling off 2 Holiday Party and Fundraiser dinner tickets (separately), each worth $50. Raffle tickets are $5 apiece or 3 for $10. Thank you for your support!
We’ll be accepting your reservations for the Holiday Party at Wednesday’s meeting. Please see the November newsletter for the details and form.
The Routine. Please bring 2 glasses to the meeting for your use. Thank you for helping set up and cleaning up after the meeting, and for consuming responsibly.
Contact Thad Rodgers at 916 715-3688 and email@example.com.
A winery, located in Martinez, has closed its doors and is selling their cased wine bottles.
SHW member Thad Rodgers is putting together a group buy of new wine bottles at $5 a case (includes transport to the Sacramento-Auburn area). With deep punts, the 750 ml Bordeaux-style bottles come in Antique Green, Light Green, and Flint (clear). Samples of the bottles are available for viewing at SHW’s November 16 meeting (this Wednesday).
Place your order with Thad by Friday, November 18. He’ll also be at the November 16 meeting.
SHW members volunteer to organize group buys for the convenience of Club members. Thanks for remitting and promptly picking up your order.
