Greetings Fellow Winemakers and BBQ Enthusiasts!
The Amador Winemakers Association’s (AWA) annual BBQ is quickly approaching and we would love to invite the Sacramento club out for a fantastic day of culinary deliciousness, camaraderie, and competition. We’ll also be joined by the El Dorado and Grass Valley clubs so it will be a wonderful opportunity to form new friendships, sample some fine wines from the other clubs, and possibly even learn a bit from our neighbors. The BBQ will feature a live band and the much anticipated results from the 2015 Sierra Foothills Wine Competition! We hope to see you there. Check out all of the details below!

If you can’t make the meeting let me know and we’ll find another way to “settle up”.

The Grapevine – March 2015

Here’s the latest SHW newsletter:  The Grapevine – March 2015.

The March 18 meeting welcomes back Bob Peak with The Beverage People who will be talking about wine reduction, associated issues, and possible fixes.  If you’re not really familiar with wine reduction, this will be the meeting to learn about it.

The meeting starts at 7pm upstairs at the Turn Verein located at 3349 J Street, Sacramento.  Come a few minutes early with a bottle of wine (doesn’t have to be homemade) and your wine glass and enjoy the winemaking camaraderie.  Thank you for helping set up and cleaning up.

2015 California State Fair Home Wine and Label Competitions

California State Fair Home Wine and Label Competition Entry Information

Polish off your best bottles and print your labels!  The handbook for the California State Fair home wine and label entries is now available on-line here.  The fair is accepting entries starting March 17 through April 17.  You do the paperwork on-line and we’ll accept members’ bottle and label deliveries at the April 15 SHW meeting.

Volunteer to Work the State Fair Competition and Home Wine Booth

After submitting your entries, please put on your volunteer hat.  This year, the State Fair invited SHW to help with the May 16 home wine competition event , June 20 awards ceremony, and the fair’s home wine booth.  The fair runs July 10-26.

Top winning entries will be on display at the State Fair’s home wine booth. So, if you enter and score big and you work the booth, you’ll get to kind of mention how the names match on the big win and your name badge – how cool is that?

Contact Henry Wilkinson at if you’re interested volunteering to work the state fair home wine competition.

Contact Fred Millar at if you’re interested in working a shift at the fair’s home wine booth.  Volunteering for a booth shift gets you free fair entry and free parking.

SHW Winemaker of the Year Contest

To qualify to compete for SHW’s Winemaker of the Year (WOY) award, you must enter wines in the California State Fair and SHW’s Jubilee, plus a third competition of your choice.  The 2015 WOY details aren’t out yet but check out the 2014 WOY details for what was required last year.

SHW Jubilee Wine Competition and Picnic – June 13-14, 2015

2015 SHW Jubilee wine entries will be accepted at the April and May monthly meetings.
