May 2014 The Grapevine – Hear All About It!

Hey, SHW,

There’s lots of Club activities going on and the May 2014 The Grapevine shares it with you.

Next SHW meeting:  the May 21 meeting is the evaluation of members’ 2013 red Bordeaux varietal wines (cab sauv, merlot, cab franc, petit verdot, malbec, etc.).  So that we may have enough time to evaluate each wine, only the first 15 wines will be evaluated on a first come, first served basis.  Doors open after 6:30PM – please bring TWO bottles of the wine you’d like to have evaluated (one varietal per household please) and loiter around the room’s bar until you spot Cellar Master Henry Wilkinson for check-in.

If there’s a full house on meeting night, please share tastes so that there’s enough to go around.  Bring 2 wine glasses per person and thanks for helping set-up and cleaning-up after the meeting.  Meeting starts at 7PM upstairs at the Turn Verein, 3349 J St, Sacramento.

Jubilee:  The 2014 Jubilee Wine Competition and Picnic is a 2-day event.  Wine judging will be on Saturday, June 28 in Sacramento, and the picnic and awards ceremony on the next day, June 29 in Loomis.  Jubilee wine competition information is available in the  May 2014 The Grapevine and also on the SHW website here.

Jubilee wine entries will be accepted at both the May 21 and June 18 general meetings. They will also be accepted by arrangement; contact Cellar Master Henry at 916 997-3056. An entry consists of a $10 entry fee, one 750 ml bottle of wine, entry form, and bottle-affixed label/form. Deadline for entries is June 18, 2014.

Please note that there are now two ways to complete the wine entry form: 1) the “fillable” form can be completed on-line and then printed; and the “pdf” version is printed and then completed by hand.

Winemaker of the Year:  The Jubilee Wine Competition is one of the required contests to compete for the SHW Winemaker of the Year Award.  More WOY info can be found here.

Sacramento Zinfandel Vineyard Looking for Vineyard Manager

Contact Alice Woodside at 916 296 3221 and

Sacramentan Alice Woodside writes:

“I have a small vineyard located in Sierra Oaks Vista.  2800 Northrop.  There are 70 zinfandel vines that are approximately 8 years old.  The previous people who have made wine from these vines have had to retire, so I am looking for someone to come in and take over.  I am not charging money.  I would expect the vines to be cared for and also I would like to receive at least two cases of wine at the appropriate time.  Of course since we live nearby, we would be available to help.

I hope someone can take advantage of this lovely vineyard.  It is gorgeous and a wonderful place to work.”
