Also, please remember to bring chairs, your own wine glasses, and potluck dish with serving utensils.  Please note that there are no accommodations for refrigeration or heating up dishes.

The picnic fee covers the bbq meat, beans and garlic bread, dining accouterments, and bottled waters. For those of you whose “check’s in the mail”, please seek out Treasurer Mike Touchette to ensure that your check has been received.

122 wines are scheduled to be judged by 12 judges, and we anticipate judging to finish around 12:30-1 PM; picnic and awards commence after judging.  Thank you for not disturbing the judges and cellar (barn area) while judging is going on.  Judged wines will be brought out to the picnic area and available for tasting following the judging.

In Memoriam – Michael L. Williams, Wine Judge and Educator

Michael Lee Williams passed away peacefully May 14, 2013 after a long courageous battle with cancer.  A strong supporter of SHW, Michael judged at many of SHW’s Jubilee wine competitions and occasionally came to meetings.
D.D. Smith, most recently SHW’s Chief Judge, shares this remembrance of Michael:
“In all my time as Chief Judge, I don’t think I remember a single year that Michael wasn’t there. “There” was the SHW June Jubilee, and you could count on Michael Williams to be on panel A, B or C slogging it through club wines one by one. He was easy to spot; his trademark straw hat and generous pony tail outdone only by his sandy-haired countenance. He judged everywhere — commercial and home wines all over Northern California — and he knew his stuff. He had every right to pontificate; he was, after all, one of the best and most traveled of all the judges in the state. But what we got from Michael was a delicate humility — indeed, more of a solicitous attitude that invited engagement. He deeply appreciated wines and winemaking, though I’m not sure he made any wine himself. He was my number one choice as a panel judge, and he never let me down. He just soldiered the load and our reward — not that we ever expected one — was that in his opinion the Sacramento club was making the best darn wines of any club in California. He loved our club and supported us in full measure. We loved him, too — we made him an honorary member last year when, for the first time, he couldn’t answer our call.
So I ask you to hold Michael Williams gently in your thoughts today — we have lost a true friend.”

2013 WineMaker Magazine Conference and Wine Competition Awards

pouring 2This year’s WineMaker magazine’s home wine making conference was held in beautiful Monterey on May 17-18.  SHW was invited to pour members’ wines at the event’s Friday night tasting and three cases went with several Club members who volunteered to pour. Sonia Baron, Judy Pinegar and Pilar Millar (all pictured in the photo above) were part of the entourage.

henry shoulderSaturday evening was an exciting one for the Club.  Starting out the dinner banquet was the raffle drawing and even before the salad was dressed, Sonia dragged Cellar Master Henry up to the front to help her carry her win of a new 30-gallon oak barrel.

  • Gold medals were awarded to Steve Barrett (pictured on right), Mike Harris, Sonia Baron, Stan Barrett and Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley (9).
  • Silvers were honored to Henry Wilkinson (2), Bill Seward, Mike Crews (2), Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley (4) and Mike Harris.
  • Bronze medals were earned by to Sonia Baron (2),  Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley, Dave Hicks (2), Stan Barrett, Mike Crews (2), Henry Wilkinson, Steve Barrett (2), and Fred Millar.

In all, SHW won 13 golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes for a total of 35 medals.

rex barb ladiesThe night got even better.  Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley’s 2012 Dessert Style Loganberry was awarded “Best of Show Dessert.”  Then, Barbara and Rex (pictured above in the snazzy shirts) went on to earn “Winemaker of the Year.” This honor is given to the entrant who has the highest averaged scores across their top five score wines in the competition.

Congratulations to all!!

But wait, the evening wasn’t over quite yet.  The Wine Club of the Year had not been announced. The Club distinction is awarded to the wine club whose members win the most medals in the competition. Earlier this year, in their newsletter, the LA Cellarmasters home wine making club publicly declared their intent to dethrone “that club in Sacramento” by encouraging their members to enter wines into the competition. They even offered incentives for entering.

Well, we left them in the dust (again) as Sacramento Home Winemakers earned the title of Wine Club of the Year for the second straight year.  Whoo-hoo!!

In addition to bragging rights, SHW enjoys a discount on purchases from Hobby Beverage and Equipment Company.  The business specializes in small batch brewing and wine making equipment; discount details to follow.

Thanks to members who donated their wines poured at the tasting, to the Friday night pouring crew, and to members who entered their good stuff into the competition. SHW has a lot to be proud of!

WineMaker Magazine Convention – Members Wine Donations Requested

Contact VP Sonia Baron at and 916 825-4952.  Contact Membership CoChair Fred Millar at and 916 576-9596.

The 2013 WineMaker Magazine Conference will be in Monterey, California on May 17-18.  It is at this conference where winners in the magazine’s International Amateur Wine Competition will be announced.  Last year, SHW won “Wine Club of the Year” and we hope to defend that title in this year’s contest!
