Monthly Archives: March 2013
The ORANGE COUNTY WINE SOCIETY, in conjunction with the OC Fair, is proud to sponsor the 37th annual OC Fair Wine Competition. This will be held on Saturday June 8, 2013 at the Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa. All amateur winemakers in California are invited to submit their wines for judging. Last year there were 829 entries from all parts of California. If you are considering competing for SHW’s Winemaker of the Year, this is a competition that you should seriously consider entering. For those without such lofty ambitions, entering your wines in this competition will bring you helpful comments for your future winemaking efforts.
The deadline for entries is May 18, 2013. Wine entry forms are submitted on line. More information is available at www.ocws.org
As there are so many new members, we wanted to remind you of the availability of equipment for rental or use.
Because we had to do a major repair to the crusher stemmer last year, we have decided to charge a minimal fee $10.00 for the crusher stemmer, and $5.00 for the filter. The basket press has no rental fee (hard to wreck that one!)
See all details at: http://www.sachomewine.com/member-services/winemaking-equipment-loan-program/
Also note you need to be trained how to use the equipment and sign a document before borrowing. We do equipment training at the Winemaker 101 Class, this year on Saturday August 3, 2013, details to come later.
Hi all –
I wanted to make sure that all of our membership was aware that registration for the 2013 WineMaker Magazine Conference is still open. Join fellow winemakers from across North America in Monterey County wine country for two full days packed with dozens of seminars and special events to help you make your own great home wine. At last report almost a dozen of our members had already signed up to attend. Sounds like the party of the year (oh, except for our own 40th Anniversary on April 17th!)
Go to www.winemakermag.com/conference for more information and to register for this conference, which for the first time in many, many years, is in Northern California.
Vice Presidents John Avila and Sonia Baron reminds all to bring four wine glasses for your use to Wednesday’s, March 20 meeting. Winemaker John Troiano will be guiding us through wine judging sheets and tasting. Please also refrain from wearing scents and perfumes so that we can capture the wine aroma characteristics.
Wednesday’s meeting starts a 7 PM upstairs at the Turn Verein meeting hall located at 3349 J Street in midtown Sacramento.
Once again, the El Dorado County Fair will hold its home wine competition in Placerville at the county fair grounds. Judging is May 11, Saturday, and the entry window for home wines is April 5 through May 3, 2013. Go to http://eldoradocountyfair.org/entry.html for entry information. This is a great competition, with excellent judges, and will qualify you, along with entries in the SHW June Jubilee and one other competition, to enter the Club’s Winemaker of the Year competition. Remember, there is no California State Fair Home Wine competition this year.

Most SHW members are currently receiving a subscription to WineMaker magazine via Club membership and these members are also receiving repeated subscription renewal notices. If you renewed your SHW membership by March 1 of this year, your subscription will automatically renew; please ignore the renewal notices. If you didn’t renew your membership by March 1 of this year, your subscription ends with the April/May issue.
On a technical note, while SHW membership is for the year (January-December), the magazine subscription for the membership starts with the June/July issue and concludes with the April/May issue of the following year.
If you joined SHW by March 1 of this year, your magazine subscription starts with the June/July issue.
If you’re confused about your membership, please contact Membership Co-Chair Gin Yang.
Please contact Carol Clark at email@example.com.
Preparations are well underway for SHW’s 40th Anniversary party on Wednesday, April 17. Party committee member Carol Clark wants your photos from the early 70s for a slide show during the evening. Carol is particularly seeking photos of wine club members who are making wine, and if you don’t have any of those, please submit any pic of you from the 70s. We want to see what you looked like. If you weren’t at wine making age during that decade, submit your baby pics.
Please send you pics to Carol at the email address above or bring them to the March 20 meeting. If you’d like the hard copies returned, please provide a self-addressed envelope.
Please contact John Avila at firstname.lastname@example.org and 916 997-7554.
Enjoy a day in the vineyard and learn to prune vines with this unique hands-on experience.
SHW member John Avila is offering pruning clinics at his Petite Sirah vineyard in Fair Play on Saturday mornings, March 30, April 6, and possibly on April 20. Join John in the vineyard from 9-11 AM, and then he’ll provide lunch following pruning. Since your hands will want to keep working, you can opt to flex those fingers around a couple of wine glasses – John can show you around to a couple of local wineries.
And, if you’re interested in making Petite Sirah in the upcoming harvest, a discount is provided on this fruit dependent upon your participation.
John’s contact info is listed above; please contact him for more information.
