This year’s WineMaker magazine’s home wine making conference was held in beautiful Monterey on May 17-18. SHW was invited to pour members’ wines at the event’s Friday night tasting and three cases went with several Club members who volunteered to pour. Sonia Baron, Judy Pinegar and Pilar Millar (all pictured in the photo above) were part of the entourage.
Saturday evening was an exciting one for the Club. Starting out the dinner banquet was the raffle drawing and even before the salad was dressed, Sonia dragged Cellar Master Henry up to the front to help her carry her win of a new 30-gallon oak barrel.
The banquet was also the time when the results of the magazine’s 2013 WineMaker International Amateur Wine Competition were announced. Individual winemakers whose wines earned medals were honored. SHW did good!
- Gold medals were awarded to Steve Barrett (pictured on right), Mike Harris, Sonia Baron, Stan Barrett and Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley (9).
- Silvers were honored to Henry Wilkinson (2), Bill Seward, Mike Crews (2), Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley (4) and Mike Harris.
- Bronze medals were earned by to Sonia Baron (2), Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley, Dave Hicks (2), Stan Barrett, Mike Crews (2), Henry Wilkinson, Steve Barrett (2), and Fred Millar.
In all, SHW won 13 golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes for a total of 35 medals.
The night got even better. Rex Johnston & Barbara Bentley’s 2012 Dessert Style Loganberry was awarded “Best of Show Dessert.” Then, Barbara and Rex (pictured above in the snazzy shirts) went on to earn “Winemaker of the Year.” This honor is given to the entrant who has the highest averaged scores across their top five score wines in the competition.
Congratulations to all!!
But wait, the evening wasn’t over quite yet. The Wine Club of the Year had not been announced. The Club distinction is awarded to the wine club whose members win the most medals in the competition. Earlier this year, in their newsletter, the LA Cellarmasters home wine making club publicly declared their intent to dethrone “that club in Sacramento” by encouraging their members to enter wines into the competition. They even offered incentives for entering.
Well, we left them in the dust (again) as Sacramento Home Winemakers earned the title of Wine Club of the Year for the second straight year. Whoo-hoo!!
In addition to bragging rights, SHW enjoys a discount on purchases from Hobby Beverage and Equipment Company. The business specializes in small batch brewing and wine making equipment; discount details to follow.
Thanks to members who donated their wines poured at the tasting, to the Friday night pouring crew, and to members who entered their good stuff into the competition. SHW has a lot to be proud of!
